ABOUT GREAT BARRIER

Approximately 60% of the island is administered by the Department of Conservation who maintain a network of walking tracks through regenerating native forest. Great Barrier is home to many native species including the rarest duck in the world, the Brown Teal, the largest and rarest NZ lizard, the Chevron skink as well as black petrels, north island kaka and the NZ dotterel. The absence of possums has allowed many plants to survive only on Great Barrier.
There is a variety of accommodation available from backpacker to luxury and activities to suit most visitors. These include white sandy beaches for swimming fishing, snorkeling; mountains to climb by foot or on a mountain bike; fishing, diving harbour tours and golf.
Air Discovery fly between Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island on an unscheduled basis, 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset from $120 per person. We can also service flights between Great Barrier Island and any other destination (Auckland, Whitianga, Whangarei, Tauranga, etc) - Please enquire.
